Simplified driver installation guide

Yuet's simplified motorola P2K driver installation guide
for motorola P2K cell phones
I installed WinXP recently. Today I install motorola driver on it, so I take this chance to write down the steps. It is pretty simple.

Steps: (27/01/2007 update: if these steps don't work for you, jump to here.)
1. download and install P2KTools;
2. download the motorola driver 2.9; unzip it into a folder of your choice; You should see a few .inf files in the folder.
3. start P2KTools;
4. select "Data/Fax mode" in "Connection - USB Setting" on your phone;
5. connect your phone via USB port with a USB cable;
6. wait for a while, and the "Found New Hardware Wizard" will pop up;

7. select "no, not this time" and click "Next";
8. select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click "Next";

9. select "Search for the best driver in these locations", uncheck "Search removable media", check "Include this location in the search". then click "Browse" to select the folder where you put the driver .inf files. click "Next";

10. click "Continue anyway";

11. click "Finish";

12. repeat steps 6-11 until WinXP complete installing all 5 devices/interfaces, namely, "motorola usb modem", "usb composite device", "motorola accessory interface", "Data logging MCU interface" and "Test command interface".
13. in P2KTools window, select "Switch to P2K Mode"; your phone will be detected;
14. click "Refresh" to update the folder/file tree of your phone;
15. Done. enjoy modding your phone.
(At the first time you use RSDLite to flash your phone, it will prompt you to install driver for "motorola flash interface". Just repeat steps 6-11 to install it.)

Update on 27/01/2007:
Motorola have released the driver installation packs for windows 32bit/64bit in December 2006. If the above driver installation procedure didn't work for you, you can use these driver installation packs to repair, reinstall, or remove all the motorola usb devices. Registry editing is not longer necessary.

Get them directly from Motodev. You have to sign up to download them. It is free. You will find the following drivers:

I've tried on 2 Win2K Pro systems to install the drivers, but I keep getting a broken P2K driver that's listed as 'USB Composite Device' instead of the P2K driver. This happens the first time I start P2K Tools (the downloads here, 2.9 drivers and 0.8.6 Tools).

Somewhere on the 'net I found a page where a guy showed the Registry hacks to fix this manually. Any idea where it was? I'd REALLY like to get this crappy AER firmware off of my V360, but I want to make sure all the tools work first, so I don't flat-line my phone.

Thanks a bunch for your blog! I hadn't found such a well-written list of instructions on ANY other modding site for these phones.

StanJ, what exactly do you mean by getting a broken p2k driver? Please note that you have to install 6/7 drivers, including the usb composite device.

I am not sure about the registry hack. Please first check that you have windows xp service pack 2 installed. if not, install it. then try to uninstall the driver and install again.

BTW, can the P2K tools detect your phone already? Do u have RSDLite? Can RSDLite detect your phone?

I finally found a fix. All of these P2K driver files I'd found on the modding sites (including yours) are for WinXP only. If you download the current driver file direct from Motorola http://tinyurl.com/24769k
then it works with Win2K as well as WinXP. I had to manually delete all of the INFs that referenced the screwey XP 'composite device' that's not appropriate for Win2K. The equivalent for Win2K is 'usbhub'...
I can finally see the phone in RSD Lite 3.0, and P2K Tools may work now as well. No more yellow I flags next to the devices in the Device Manager :-)

(fingers crossed - I'm about to back up the firmware then overwrite the AER firmware with something better using the testpoint method...)

Hi, Yuet!

I'm trying to get P2K drivers for Windows Vista x64 (but I also think that XP's x64 ou Server x64 are gonna work).

Can you help me with this?

Thank you!

GrepGrok, p2ktools is for accessing the p2k file system (phone memory) and the drivers, of course, is for recognize the p2k system in the phone. You can use moto4lin and the usb driver for Linux. Read this post and the moto4lin site.

Yuet, this site is incredibly helpful! will any of your MPs/DRMs/Skins work with the L7 f/w R4517 - .25R ? any plans to do so in the future?

8:53 PM, February 17, 2007 Anonymous said...

also, i've gotten Moto4Lin to work, but is there any way to flash a phone on OSX?

3:31 PM, February 18, 2007 Yuet said...

dionigi, I believe MPs/DRMs are for R4513 only. Maybe skins can be used in R417. No plan to port to R4517, as I don't have such a phone. Read this post about flashing on OSX.

I have a Motorola V360v and I have downloaded every program I could think of to add skins to my phone and maybe flash it as well. But none of these programs are able to detect my phone, other than Motorola Phone Tools of course but that is totally useless to me. Can you please help me.

11:08 PM, February 26, 2007 Yuet said...

chrisv, have you tried the steps in this post? and have you tried to download the driver utility from motodev?

2:12 AM, February 28, 2007 Jacques said...

Hi yuet, I have the v360, and recently flashed it with your flashfile. I wanted to do some seem editing with p2ktools, but can't get the program to see my phone. I downloaded all the drivers you recommended, installed everything, but without any success. What tickles me thou, is that everytime my pc detected the new usb device, it only see the motorola usb modem, and installs that, but not all the other devices you mentioned, like the composite device etc. Why is that? I also tried other usb ports, but also without any success. I also tried to use p2kseem, but that also didn't work. Pls guide me?

5:10 PM, February 28, 2007 Yuet said...

jacqvt, try to get the driver utility from motodev, then install it.

8:40 PM, February 28, 2007 Jacques said...

Thanks yuet for the reply, But if your talking about the driver version 2.6.2.0, I already have it, and tried it. I just want to make sure about something too, if I understand right, The phone must be switched on in normal mode, not the * and # one. And must I have motorola phone tools installed for it to function?

12:25 AM, March 01, 2007 Yuet said...

jacqvt, you do it in normal mode. the MPT is not necessary. BTW, what version of p2ktool r u using?

9:22 PM, March 01, 2007 Jacques said...

I'm using p2ktools version 0.7.1.9. Something else I dont know if its correct, is p2ktools dont really install on the pc. When I click on the p2ktools icon, it opens the program. There's no installation. Is this correct? Where else can I donload this program? I downloaded it from motomodders.

10:52 PM, March 01, 2007 Yuet said...

that version is too old, get the version in this post and try again.

11:23 PM, March 01, 2007 Jacques said...

Okay thanks, I just got the version 3. Hope that work, I'll post here to say.

11:30 AM, March 02, 2007 Yuet said...

I mean the P2Ktool version is old, you should at least get 0.8 version.

11:56 PM, March 21, 2007 Anonymous said...

I followed all the steps for p2k driver installation and didn't work, I tried with the drivers in motodev and motorola phone tools and rsdlite and finally there is a connection (they recognize my phone)but the p2k tools doesn't.
I open p2k tools, plug my phone and in the bottom of the screen of p2k tools shows disconect.
please, help me what do I need to do.

12:40 AM, March 22, 2007 Yuet said...

have you tried to manually switch p2ktools to P2K mode?

2:58 AM, March 22, 2007 Anonymous said...

yes, i switched to p2k mode and was the same "the status shows disconected".
when i installed the rsdlite 3.2 and 3.3 also some files couldn't install because showed that i had an old service pack but the rsdlite works ok. do you think i need service pack 2 for example?

10:19 AM, March 22, 2007 Yuet said...

hey there Yuet.
I've got a L7 and when I try to install the drivers, USB Composite Device installs but then shows "Device Cannot Start. Code 10". None of the psk programs or MotoMidMan recognise my phone. any help?

thanks

4:07 PM, May 17, 2007 Yuet said...

please download the driver tool from motorola, use it to uninstall the driver then reinstall.

Have tried to install p2k drivers on xp with no success. I do not get the same "Found New hardware Wizard" as yours. Mine says "Cannot Install This Hardware. There was a problem installing this hardware: USB Modem.
An Error occurred during the installation of the device. Fatal error during installation.
I have tried different ports, moto installer to clean and repair and your install guide. Nothing seems to work. My phone is recognized on my Mac with Moto4lin, but I have not tried to flash as I am trying to remove this AER firmware. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
